Already established in Malta, Surv is becoming a presence in the New York minimal techno scene with new residencies and tight dj sets. But I was happy to learn that he’s also actively producing new material. In this exclusive we present a fresh Surv production. Enjoy.
We’re back with another exclusive from Open Source. Like Cold Room (covered here previously) Magic Money is a departure from Matt’s older techno productions, but maintains the dark vibe, intelligent arrangement and crisp production.
We’ll be on the lookout for more material from Matt in 2011.
Kings In Queens is probably my all time favorite KBI jam. The song is a stew of musical styles dominated by a deep, super low groove. Rather than come up with a different guitar riff, I just followed Kevin’s bass line and tried to thicken it up. Guitar (Steinberger GM, with EMG 85s) is wearing gauge .011 strings and is tuned down to D. The verse riff is played through the neck pickup and the tone pot was used to boost the bass and create big dirt.
While the words (and vocals) are a huge part of the song I think it more than holds its own as an instrumental and I came across this outtake from a 1998 session.
Underdog was a Kill By Inches crowd fave which survived a few vocalist changes. We recorded a few versions of it, but this was the only one that was released on a demo CD.
Featuring Kevin Oriol on bass, Steve on drums and Alex (me) on guitar this version was recorded at Electric Plant Studios sometime in early 1998. The silly photo is an outtake from the Down To 3hree CD sleeve shoot, taken by Beth Benfatti. (Down To 3hree EP would be recorded in early 1999.)
Ink was the topic of a few KBI tracks, and Desecrate The Flesh is probably the first one that comes to mind. Many versions were recorded, with different vocalists and guitarists.
This one was recorded on January 12, 1998 at Electric Plant Studios with Jeff Blanchard (check out his new band: Eyes Of The Sun) on vocals and Kev, Steve and me (Alex) laying down the rest. A heavy-ass track, this one was often requested during live shows. I’ll put up a another version of it soon.
Another instrumental KBI jam from the 1998 session at Electric Plant Studios. Once again, Kevin Oriol is rocking the bass, Steve beating the crap out of his drums and I’m on guitar. E.F.S. (Everything Fucking Sucks) was one of my all time KBI faves.
Steve wrote the lyrics but then lost them so it always remained an instrumental. (I remember reading the words once and they were really good. Oh, well.)
Nastee Stuff is a funky techno jam with a thick bass line, a quality it shares with a few previously covered tracks including Overtone. About 4 minutes into the track the bass riff is stripped down but the beat is augmented with lots of percussion. I’ve contemplated making that break more dominant in the track since it was more along the lines of material I would play when DJing, but ended up preserving the original format of the track.
While the track is over 6 years old, it was never aggressively shopped and therefore never released. So here it goes. Let me know if you want the original (.wav) version and I’ll get you a copy.
By the way, the title is a quote occasionally used by Walt “Clyde” Fraizer when calling Knicks games. If I remember correctly the last Knick to stuff nastily would have to be Latrell Spreewell, so he deserves partial title credit.
Released in 2002, Mantra appeared on one of the first Made On Earth compilations released by Bush Records. As Bush was one of my favorite labels at the time having the track picked up by Eric Powell (label owner) was a real treat. Alongside Mantra were productions by Sean Colt and DJ Kruze, another bonus.
Mantra itself is a raw, loopy track inspired by one of my favorite producers, DJ CZR. In fact, if I remember correctly, a part of the beat was sampled from a DJ CZR record.
As it turns out I can’t for the life of me find the original digital file of this track. Its either buried somewhere on some disc, or maybe exists on a DAT someplace. What I do have is a CD with it which has since become almost unplayable and is the reason you may hear some digital crackle on the MP3 link below. (And yes, I do have a few vinyl copies of the record, but the decks are not accessible at the moment and the busted CD was the best available option for this post.)
